CARE & MAINTENANCE

Your rug is made to last generations. Proper care ensures it ages beautifully.

REGULAR CARE

  • Vacuum weekly using a suction-only setting (no beater bar or rotating brush). This removes dust and prevents dirt from settling into fibers.
  • Rotate your rug every 3-6 months to ensure even wear and sun exposure.
  • Use a quality rug pad underneath to prevent slipping, protect floors, and extend your rug's life.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight when possible. Prolonged UV exposure can fade colors over time.

SPILLS & STAINS

  • Act immediately. Blot liquids with a clean, white cloth—never rub.
  • Work from the outside of the spill inward to prevent spreading.
  • For solid spills, gently scrape up excess before blotting.
  • Avoid water on silk rugs. Consult a professional for silk rug stains.

DEEP CLEANING

  • Professional cleaning every 1-2 years is recommended.
  • Do not machine wash or use DIY steam cleaners. These can damage handmade rugs.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals or stain removers not specifically designed for handmade rugs.
  • For professional cleaning, seek specialists experienced with handmade wool, silk, or natural fiber rugs.

WHAT'S NORMAL

  • Shedding: New wool rugs shed excess fiber for the first few months. Regular vacuuming reduces this. Shedding will naturally decrease.
  • Sprouting: Loose threads may emerge from the surface. Simply trim flush with scissors. Do not pull them out.
  • Color variations: Hand-dyed fibers naturally vary slightly. This is characteristic of handmade rugs, not a defect.
  • Pile crushing: High-traffic areas may show temporary pile flattening. Regular rotation helps distribute wear.

REPAIRS

  • Most handmade rugs can be professionally repaired if damaged—from edge binding to re-knotting sections.

WHAT TO AVOID

  • Beater bar vacuum attachments (damages fibers)
  • Direct prolonged sunlight (fades colors)
  • High-moisture areas without ventilation (can cause mildew)
  • Furniture legs directly on rug (use protectors)
  • Harsh chemicals or DIY stain removers
  • Folding for long-term storage (roll instead)

STORAGE

  • If storing your rug, clean it professionally first.
  • Roll (never fold) with pile facing inward.
  • Wrap in breathable fabric like cotton sheets. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.
  • Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight.
  • Check stored rugs every few months for pests or moisture.
