The Craft

The Ellipse looks simple. It is not. The large oval form requires the tufter to work freehand along a curved boundary for an extended run any drift in pressure or angle shows in the finished edge. The navy verticals must remain plumb across the full height of the piece, their borders crisp where they meet the sand field. These are the quiet demands of abstract work: no ornament to hide behind, no busy pattern to absorb small inconsistencies. The artisans who make the Ellipse are those who have earned the steadiness for it craftspeople for whom the tufting gun has become an extension of the hand rather than a tool being operated.
