The Craft

The Map is technically among the most demanding pieces in the collection. A surface covered edge to edge in fine contour lines requires the tufter to maintain consistent line weight and spacing across the full area of the rug with no background field to absorb variation and no ornamental detail to draw the eye away from irregularities. The lines must flow with the logic of the topographic composition: converging where the design indicates high ground, opening where the terrain flattens. It is sustained, whole-surface work of the kind that India's carpet-making tradition has always known how to hold patient, meticulous, and spatially intelligent.
