The Craft

The Panel's strength lies in its restraint, which makes the quality of its execution entirely visible. The charcoal lines dividing the terracotta fields must be even and plumb across the full height of each column any drift shows immediately against the broad, uninterrupted ground. The stepped silhouette is cut and bound by hand after tufting, each column edge finished cleanly so the architectural illusion holds. It is the kind of piece where the craft is most present precisely because it is least decorated where the making must be as considered as the design.
