The Craft

The Serpent asks something particular of its makers: that they render a living form in pile. The small serpentine figures at the border require the tufter to shift between the broad, even runs of the navy field and the tight, curved work of each animal figure, a change of pace and attention that happens repeatedly across the piece. The clawed tips and curled bodies are finished with the care of illustration, each one slightly individual in the way that hand work always is. It is in these details small enough to miss on first glance that the artisan's hand is most legible.
