The Craft

The Stratum is the most labour-intensive piece in the collection. Its surface of interlocking tonal bands each one following an irregular, flowing boundary requires the tufter to navigate dozens of colour transitions across the full area of the rug, each edge held cleanly where one band meets the next. The irregular silhouette is shaped and bound entirely by hand after tufting, following the organic outline of the composition rather than any geometric rule. There is no shortcut in a piece of this density: every band, every boundary, every curve of the outer edge is the product of sustained, considered handwork.
