The Craft

The Volume makes visible a principle that hand tufting shares with painting: colour is structure. The three faces of each form must be toned precisely relative to each other top face lightest, front face mid-tone, side face darkest and this relationship must hold consistently across the full surface for the illusion of volume to work. The clean diagonal lines between faces, where one plane meets another, are among the most demanding edges in the collection to execute straight, sharp, and unforgiving of drift. The stepped silhouette is cut and bound by hand after tufting, each angle finished to hold the geometric logic of the design.
