Understanding Rug Making Techniques: Hand Knotted vs Hand Tufted vs Flatweave
When choosing a handmade rug, understanding the technique used to create it is crucial. The method affects everything from durability and price to texture and maintenance. At INAAV, we work with three primary techniques: hand-knotting, hand-tufting, and flatweave. Here's how they differ and what each means for your rug.
HAND-KNOTTED RUGS: THE HEIRLOOM TECHNIQUE
Hand-knotting is the most labor-intensive and revered rug-making method. Each individual knot is tied by hand around the warp threads, row by row, creating a dense pile that can last generations.
The Process
An artisan sits at a loom with vertical warp threads stretched taut. Using a small knife, they tie individual knots around pairs of warp threads. After completing each row of knots, a weft thread is woven through and beaten down to secure the knots in place. This process continues, sometimes for months, until the rug is complete.
Time Investment
A hand-knotted rug measuring 8x10 feet with 120 knots per square inch requires approximately 2,400 hours of work. That's three to four months of full-time labor by a skilled artisan.
Knot Density
Quality is measured in knots per square inch. Higher density means finer detail, better durability, and typically higher cost. Our hand-knotted rugs range from 80 to 180 knots per square inch, depending on the design complexity and desired durability.
Best For
Living rooms, dining rooms, and spaces where you want an investment piece that will last decades. Hand-knotted rugs develop character over time, becoming softer and more beautiful with age.
Cost Range
Due to the time and skill required, hand-knotted rugs are the most expensive option. Expect to invest significantly more than other techniques, but remember you're creating an heirloom.
HAND-TUFTED RUGS: THE POPULAR MIDDLE GROUND
Hand-tufting is our most requested technique. It creates beautiful texture more quickly than hand-knotting while maintaining the handmade quality our clients value.
The Process
Instead of tying individual knots, the artisan uses a tufting gun to punch yarn through a canvas backing stretched on a frame. The yarn loops are then sheared to create an even pile height. A latex coating and fabric backing are applied to secure the tufts.
Time Investment
A hand-tufted rug of similar size to our hand-knotted example takes 6 to 10 weeks rather than months. This efficiency makes hand-tufting more accessible price-wise while maintaining handcrafted quality.
Design Flexibility
Hand-tufting allows for varied pile heights within a single rug, creating dimensional patterns and textures that hand-knotting cannot easily achieve. This makes it excellent for contemporary designs with texture variation.
Best For
Bedrooms, low to medium traffic areas, and clients who want handmade quality at a more accessible price point. Excellent for contemporary designs with textural interest.
Durability
While not as indestructible as hand-knotted rugs, quality hand-tufted pieces last 10 to 20 years with proper care. The latex backing does eventually deteriorate, which is the primary longevity limitation.
Cost Range
Hand-tufted rugs typically cost 40 to 60 percent less than comparable hand-knotted pieces, making them our most popular option for clients balancing quality with budget.
FLATWEAVE RUGS: THE REFINED CLASSIC
Flatweave rugs have no pile. The warp and weft threads are woven together on a loom, creating a flat, often reversible textile.
The Process
On a traditional handloom, weft threads are woven over and under warp threads in various patterns. The tension, color changes, and weaving patterns create the design. No knots, no pile, just pure weaving.
Types of Flatweave
Dhurries are lightweight cotton flatweaves, perfect for layering. Kilims use a slit-weave technique creating bold geometric patterns. Soumaks incorporate a wrapping technique creating a slight texture without true pile.
Time Investment
Flatweave creation is faster than knotted techniques but still requires significant skill. An 8x10 foot flatweave typically takes 6 to 8 weeks, depending on pattern complexity.
Best For
Layering over other rugs, high-traffic areas, spaces where you want pattern without bulk, dining rooms where chair legs slide easily, and anywhere you want easy maintenance.
Advantages
Flatweaves are lightweight, easy to clean, often reversible, and age beautifully. They're less prone to shedding than pile rugs and show less wear in high-traffic areas.
Cost Range
Generally the most affordable handmade option, flatweaves offer excellent value. Prices vary based on material (cotton versus wool) and design complexity.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT TECHNIQUE FOR YOUR SPACE

Hand-knotted commands premium pricing. Hand-tufted offers middle-ground value. Flatweave provides accessible entry to handmade quality.
Traffic Level
High traffic demands hand-knotted durability. Medium traffic suits hand-tufted well. Flatweaves excel in dining areas and hallways.
Aesthetic
Traditional patterns shine in hand-knotted format. Contemporary designs often work beautifully hand-tufted. Geometric and linear patterns are flatweave territory.
Timeline
Hand-knotted requires 12 to 16 weeks. Hand-tufted needs 6 to 10 weeks. Flatweave typically takes 6 to 8 weeks.
Longevity Goals
Heirloom pieces should be hand-knotted. Pieces you might refresh in a decade work well hand-tufted. Seasonal or layering rugs can be flatweave.
